The stock clutch and flywheel on the RX-7 was designed to offer maximum drivability, smooth acceleration, and with the idea that the car would be producing somewhere near 255HP. The clutch packages we offer have all been tested by us on many different cars in a multitude of driving conditions.

 

The Bönez Street-Comp Clutch is designed for better durability and more holding capacity than the stock clutch and pressure plate. This is ideal for modified cars producing up to 450HP that need a good clutch to harness the power yet still remain civilized enough for street driving. We’ve seen this clutch get abused on the street and drag strip by highly modified cars and still hold up better than any other brand we’ve tried.

When using the Bönez Street-Comp Clutch, it is highly advisable to replace the stock, rubber clutch hose with the RP Braided Stainless Steel Clutch Hose.

RP Standard Clutch Kit For stock cars, we offer our RP Standard clutch kit which can handle up to 15% more power than stock. The RP Standard Clutch kit is better than a standard stock replacement clutch, but is not intended for racing use. You get the clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bearing and seal, and even a clutch alignment tool; all the parts you’ll need to do the job right! This is the kit we’ve been using in our shop for mildly modified, street driven cars with great success. Full RP Standard Clutch Kit shown.

For the serious drag racer, we now offer state-of-the-art axles which are an EXACT replacement for the stock axles. Under serious racing conditions, the stock axles are well known to twist and snap like a twig. We’ve been known to bring 3-4 PAIRS of axles to an event for spares before we began using these new, high-tech axles. For you material engineers out there, our axles start life as 4340 Chromoly Steel which is then vacuum melted argon degassed. This new material, called 300M, is the same material Top Fuel dragster input shafts are made from using the very same technique. The axles are then polished for maximum tensile strength and come delivered to you ready to install.

RP Stainless Steel Clutch Hose RP Braided Stainless Steel Clutch Hose. The heavier duty pressure plates used in the Bönez clutch kits require maximum pressure from your clutch hydraulic system to engage at the proper point. If you’re having problems with the clutch engaging near the floor, this upgraded hose should help eliminate the problem.

RP Pilot Bearing Removal Tool Whenever you are replacing the clutch, it’s extremely important to also replace all the bearings and seals. Luckily for the home mechanic, a clutch job on an RX-7 is a fairly straight-forward job without too many hitches, except one. The Pilot Bearing on these cars is notoriously difficult to remove. Because it has such a tight fit, the old backyard tricks for removing the pilot bearing just don’t work. A special tool made by Mazda was designed to remove the bearing in a matter of seconds, instead of hours, without damaging the eccentric shaft. This is the tool we use in the shop for every clutch job we do, there just isn’t an easier way. Note: Tool available for rent only with purchase of a clutch.

It is always a good idea to replace the throwout bearing, pilot bearing and seal whenever you replace the clutch and pressure plate. You should also resurface the flywheel. For optimal clutch performance, the flywheel should be removed and resurfaced professionally.
Also note that the pilot bearing has an extremely tight fit which makes it nearly impossible to remove without using the proper tools. Release bearing shown.
